Manatees are protected as a threatened species and have been endangered primarily due to marine accidents, diminished sea grass and vegetation and human encroachment and building development. These gentle giants that live in Florida rivers, bays, canals and coastal areas move freely between fresh and salt water. The "sea cow" as they are often known, are a marine treasure in this part of the United States.
