The Convict

Project type

Oil on Canvas

Date

March 2026

Location

Fort Myers, Florida

Sheepshead fish can be found in SWFL around inshore structures like fishing piers, docks and jetties. Their dark, vertical stripes resemble striped prison jumpsuits which inspired the name "Convict Fish". They also have strong "human-like" teeth designed to crush barnacles, oysters and crabs. These fish are adept at "picking your bait" without feeling a solid bite. They are stealthy and fast swimmers and are nervous and spook easily by noise; other reasons for the name Convict fish. This fish is white, firm-fleshed with a mild flavor similar to that of cod or flounder.
